Volunteering in Cambodia

I get a lot of people asking me about volunteering in Cambodia and I think it is really great that people want to put back into the communities that they are living in or traveling through! The only problem is how to do it ethically and without detriment, unfortunately at the moment, here in Cambodia especially, there are some shady characters operating who are using foreigners money not to help Cambodia and her people but to benefit themselves.

So what can you do?

My first suggestion is to try find a reputable company to volunteer with - this in itself can be quite the mission! If possible try and commit to a minimum of 2 months. It can be detrimental, especially if children are involved, to have a revolving door of tourists ‘helping’. A great organisation that I support here in Phnom Penh is The Cambodia Children’s Fund - you can check out their volunteer programs HERE.

Don’t have 2 months to give? There are some tour companies that incorporate a volunteer element into their trips. These can be a great option if you are limited for time and want to get out and see the main sights of a country at the same time. One company I love the work of is G Adventures - they run their own projects all around the world and you can spend time at any one of them volunteering and putting back into the communities in which you are traveling through. They have a program that runs through Cambodia and Laos and has a volunteering component - you can check it out HERE.

I love her wholesome approach to food, life and adventure, and it's a highlight of my week to follow her travels to places I'd rather be.
